Garden Experience Guide

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site

This site features three types of gardens: A unique garden is the Three Sisters garden that includes corn to allow beans to grow up to the sun, beans to increase nitrogen in the soil and squash to shade the soil to allow moisture retention and weed suppression. Even today, First Nations in North Dakota grow these special species of corn, beans and squash together.

The Solar Patio Garden also known as the "Beer Garden" grows hops and barley. Cheers!

Two produce gardens featuring heirloom seeds are called the Farm Manager's Garden and the Ross Garden where the produce is used on site.

Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site is open from 9:30 am - 5 pm, Monday to Friday starting May 9, 2016 and on weekends for guided tours scheduled on the hour, every hour, from 10 am to 4 pm. During July and August the site is open 7 days per week until September 5, 2016. These are also the hours of the Three Sisters garden, however, visitors are welcome to explore the site after hours on their own, but the buildings and facilities will be closed outside of these hours and there will be no staff on site.
