Garden Experience Guide

Bellevue House National Historic Site

Unearth the challenges of gardening in the 1840s. The extensive grounds of Bellevue House offer a place to try out 19th century tools, discover heritage gardening methods and how lawn care required a scythe. Featuring an ornamental garden, orchard, and vegetable garden, the tutorage of the period costumed gardener offers insight into organic growing. With sunshine, a fresh breeze off Lake Ontario, heirloom plant species, old variety apple trees, and decorative flower beds, visitors will discover why the extensive grounds were an important consideration in Sir John A. Macdonald’s decision to make this Italianate Villa his home.

Open seven days a week from Victoria Day Weekend to Canadian Thanksgiving. Opening hours 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
